John Roger Stephens was born in Ohio. He grew up with his parents and siblings. He attended Springfield North High School. Roger was offered admission with scholarship in Harvard University but he attended the University of Pennsylvania where he studied English. He became the musical director and the president of Co-ed Jazz and the pop group called Counterparts. He found his interest in music and emerge as a good piano artist. Soon he was hired to play piano on “Everything Is Everything”.

During his graduation, John Legend began to hold the number of shows around Philadelphia and in the audience of New York and Washington D.C.
