Amos was born in Newark, New Jersey, United States, he is the child of Annabelle P. and John A. Amos, Sr. He spent his childhood in East Orange, New Jersey getting his graduate degree from East Orange High School in 1958.
He got admission to Colorado State University got his sociology degree and qualified as a social worker. Amos was a Champion of Golden Gloves Boxing. He was a player on the Colorado State Rams football team as well.

Career History
John started his active career by working in The Mary Tyler Moore Show, playing the character of Gordy Howard, from 1970 until 1973. In 1971, he appeared in a commercial for McDonald’s with Anson Williams.
Before continuing his 61st episode in Good Times, he appeared three times on the sitcom Maude, as the husband of Florida Evans.
Later on, he performed prominent roles in various television shows and films that made him a renowned personality. He played a role as Captain Dolan on the television series “Hunter” from 1984 to 1985.
In the CBS police drama “The District”, he co-starred in 1997. His other dramas include All About the Andersons, Police Story, The A-Team, The Cosby Show, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, In the House, Martin, Murder, She Wrote, and Coming to America.
